Villa Park High School Make America Great Again

FOUNTAIN VALLEY – As Lee Greenwood and Toby Keith tunes played over a megaphone, about 300 President Donald Trump supporters marched four miles around Mile Square Park on Saturday, waving flags, holding homemade signs and chanting "U-S-A" and "Build that wall."

The march on Saturday, June 3, was organized by Southern California Silent Majority MAGA, a grass-roots organization whose organizers planned a Make America Great Again march in Huntington Beach three months ago.

Unlike the previous march, in which one of the organizers was pepper-sprayed and a melee with about 30 counter-protesters broke out, Saturday's event featured a few verbal confrontations but no physical violence. More than a dozen sheriff's deputies were on site, at times riding in cars and on horseback alongside the marchers.

Darlene Savord, a Tustin resident and event organizer, often stood at the front of the marchers with a megaphone in hand.

"Today was a huge success," she said. "I felt that it was extremely educational. I learned a few things. I'm hoping that most of the people who attended will become more politically minded."

The march started around 1:45 p.m. at the corner of Euclid Street and Warner Avenue and proceeded around the perimeter of Mile Square Park. Along the route, some marchers also chanted, "Hey hey, ho ho, illegal immigrants have got to go." One marcher wore a military helmet and held up a shield.

As soon as marchers proceeded to the sidewalk, a few counter-protesters met them with signs reading, "Lock Trump Up."

Bill Brennan, a Laguna Niguel resident wearing a blue "Make Surfing Great Again" cap, stood underneath a tree as the marchers exchanged words with his group.

"I think the country is headed in the wrong direction," he told the Register. "Most of (Trump's) policies are not good."

The verbal confrontation lasted a few minutes. Later, marchers walked past Brennan and continued down the street before meeting another group of parkgoers who shouted at the marchers.

Anthony Gill drove from Corona to attend the march. He said his 20-year-old daughter chose not to come because she felt she might be attacked. Gill, a military veteran, said he wanted to avoid any violence.

"If I see any of that, I'm out of here," he said.

Before the march, a handful of elected officials, including Rep. Dana Rohrabacher (R-Costa Mesa) and Assemblyman Travis Allen (R-Huntington Beach) spoke about Trump and California politics.

Westminster resident Elena Rutkowski was one of those who arrived early.

Rutkowski, a former trustee with the Westminster School District, said she came to show her support for President Trump.

"He's doing a good job," she said. "We need to support him instead of cutting him down at every opportunity."

She brought homemade signs reading, "No Sanctuary States" and "Oppose SB54," also a theme at the march.

On Trump's decision to withdraw the U.S. from the Paris climate deal, Rutkowski, an immigrant from Poland, said she was impressed.

"I think it was the best thing he ever did," she said.

In addition to the march, the five-hour event also featured a photo booth, barbecue and educational tents.

Tim Kiler of Huntington Beach attended the event with his daughter, handing out pamphlets for a pro-life constitutional amendment. Kiler, a Trump supporter, said he said the Fountain Valley event was an act of "taking it to the streets."

"We can't let people run roughshod over us and not say anything," he said. "We got to stand up."
